"Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart." ~ Kahlil Gibran
So Aug ‘03 we moved here. The move was filled with drama thanks to SILW/MS who couldn’t decide when she was going to move. It took FIL to get her ass in gear. She moved out Saturday and we moved in Sunday (She was still picking up stuff after and still had a ton of shit in the basement).
“Here” is a two story two family home. It was built in 1904. It originally had an earth basement, but FIL fixed that shortly after buying the house. I believe he bought it with two thoughts in mind, a home for his daughter and her family because they were losing the place they were renting and retirement. The following 10 months here were filled with drop by’s by all of my inlaws, and lots of other tensions. The day we moved in SILW/MS gave us one key. I knew damn well that wasn’t the only key she possessed, she just decided she was going to hold on to one. So we called FIL and told him we were changing the locks. He had no problem with that. We gave him a copy of course. MIL was a little upset, she thought we had done it because she had a copy… which meant there were two copies floating around besides the one she gave us. How nice! Yeah not havin it!!
We settled in fairly quickly. The Drama Queen started school and made a ton of new friends her first day. We got to know some of the neighbors, Some of whom are still here.. others have moved on. In the spring, FIL decided to sell one of his other properties and asked if we wanted to buy this one. I was hesitant, but feared having to move if we didn’t. We figured it was now or never, and agreed. They set it up so that we would have a gift or equity and on paper would be buying the house for $50,000 more than we actually were. In June of 2004 we became proud owners of a 100 year old house and quickly realized how fun it was going to be to be landlords… ugh!

When I lived in Deadwood, I once went down to the basement of the Victorian I was renting in, built 1891. It had an earth basement, too. It smelled SO bad down there, it made my eyes water. I swear there were bodies buried under that house.
