If you’re at the crossroads where things have gotten so bad that you’re considering giving up on God tells me several things. The First thing it tells me is you have most likely experienced some kind of loss in your life. This loss is probably a significant loss. It could possibly be the loss of a loved one, or the loss of your career, or home, but what ever the loss is can not be reconciled in your understanding of a God who is supposed to love you completely, and this loss goes against your understanding of the God you have pictured your whole life. You probably can’t understand how can a God who is so loving permit this tragedy in your life. It may be the case that the loss came after you sought the Lord and prayed and asked God to prevent this thing from happening. Yet despite your tears and prayers and belief that God would spare you, it happened anyway.
So here you are. You may feel betrayed, and or abandoned by God. It’s possible that you might even question His existence and even if he does exist, your can’t understand why He didn’t come to your aid so what’s why should you follow Him anyway.
First off let me say that you’re not alone. One of the best selling Christian books you can pick up (highly recommended reading) at your local book store is called “When God Doesn’t make Sense”, authored by the well known founder of Focus on the family, physiologist Dr. James Dobson. The book is one of most widely read Christian books because this book speaks to so many people, because that means so many people are hurting and feel like you do, in short they feel that God has let them down. They feel confused and disappointed and don’t know how to relate any more to God.
In the Bible There’s a scripture that says, “my people perish for a lack of knowledge”. In many cases, the very same people who feel God has abandoned them are unaware of God’s warning and Instruction to us regarding the trials of this present life. In fact tragedies in our lives our predicted in the new testament as something you can count on to occur with as much predictability as the the sun rising in the morning or the lack of sunshine in the night. Just like day and night so to our lives our split with moments of sunshine and moments of darkness, one seemingly follows the other. The bible says, think it not strange when the fiery trails of life come on you as though something strange has happened. In other words, I love you enough to warn you. This is a part of life. I will not spare you even though I love you from all moments of darkness and pain and loss.
As a Christian myself I must admit that as Christian we have been mislead. Perhaps it was not intentional but nevertheless we have been mislead. Many pastors (some quite famous) have preached for years about a prosperity gospel that enables us freedom from illness, pain and suffering. They have gone on to use various scriptures to support their view that if you have just enough faith that you can have an abundant life on earth. They then go on and define abundant in terms of westernized economy wealth. To them this mean you can drive a nice car, live in a nice house, have plenty of money, etc… What they fail to point out is that the Bible life has two complete different meanings for the word life. One meaning is the meaning for biological life (bios). The other meaning represents spiritual life (zeos). Many references to the life on earth as a Christian is overly focused on the bios or biological or material life, when in fact the scripture is referring to our spiritual life. This is why God loves us so much that he warns us not to be surprised when the trials of life come on us as though something strange has happened. In other words, plan on it and don’t be surprised when it happens to you. It does not mean God no longer loves you any less then he loved his own Son. Or any less then he has loved the countless martyrs who laid down their life for the sake of others or the sake of the Gospel. Remember Jesus’s words when he said, if you want to follow me then pick up your cross and follow Me. The cross represents to each of our burdens, our hardships, our sacrifices, not our comforts and prosperity.
Please remember that earth is not supposed to be an early preview of heaven. Life on earth is to prepare us for Heaven. I want to encourage you not to give up. God really does love you just as much as he loved his only Son who he did not spare, or John the baptist who was beheaded for being a righteous man. And millions of others just like you have experienced great losses, but endured and continued on in their faith knowing that this life is like a flower which appears for just a moment and then is gone.
Remember eternity is a long time, so set your heart on those things which are above and not on earthly things. Hang in there my dear sister and brother as we continue this march together, carrying our cross and remember God does love you!
