Top 5 Case Management Software Packages For Lawyers
Choosing the right case management software product for the law firm these days can be quite daunting with the sheer volume of products available on the market. With the emergence of LPO (Law Practice Optimization) becoming more of a main stream requirement and not just a consideration, selecting the right product before you commit your office to any long term solution is essential.
Below is a short overview of the different leading solutions in use today.
The Legal Assistant
The Legal Assistant offers a very competitively priced product that proudly exclaims to be one of the few case management systems that retains consistency through their application without needing to use separate products for different tasks such as billing, document management, HUD-1 Form generation or case management unlike other products available in this market.
The Legal Assistant provides multiple databases for managing different aspects of the software e.g. Clients, Letter Templates, Case Files etc. that all fit together seamlessly. Currently The Legal Assistant provides modules for Personal Injury, Real Estate, Criminal Defense and Family Law matters.
The company was established in 2006 and from the beginning has followed the ethos of producing software designed by attorneys, for attorneys.
Pricing for The Legal Assistant starts at only $75 per month, per module, per attorney so is well suited for both the smaller firm as well as the larger firm.
Amicus Attorney
Amicus Attorney is one of the longer established companies having been founded in 1993. They offer several case management applications depending on the level of features you require as well as a dedicated mobile edition. They offer a ‘Premium Edition” for the medium to large firm, a “Small Firm Edition”, an “Amicus Accounting”, to manage time & billing and a “Mobile Edition” allowing smartphones to connect to an exposed server running one of the primary editions of the software.
Amicus tends to have a rather more complex pricing model than some of the other products, with different flat fees applicable for the initial purchase of the product, followed by varying prices on maintenance plans and additionally different levels of support. For those who are already familiar with the product this may be an attractive option with the one time fee, however if you did require one-off support, then the cost would be $99 per call which could soon offset any savings made from not opting for one of the support arrangements.
Abacus Law
Abacus Law was founded in1983 by Californian attorney Judd Kessler. The company provides a range of solutions varying from the basic package “AbacusLaw” which provides the typical case management and document management features and “AbacusLaw Gold” which adds time and billing onto the standard package to “Abacus Sky” which is a Cloud hosted package eliminating the need to install anything at all in your office as all required applications and associated data is remotely managed.
An online demo is available by arrangement and pricing is unfortunately also on application so I am unable to present their pricing model.
Needles
Needles is another company that has been in the case management software market for considerable time. Originally formed in 1982, Needles released their first Personal Injury case management system known as PINS (Personal Injury Negligence System) in 1985 for Microsoft DOS. 1995 saw PINS migration to the Microsoft Windows platform and today the product itself is now also known as Needles.
Needles is a heavily customizable product that provides support for Personal Injury, Workers Compensation, Social Security, Defense, Family Law and others and includes downloadable libraries of case type configurations to customize the platform.
Needles pricing model is based on the number of concurrent users at any one time, that is the number of users allowed to use the system simultaneously. An example price for a single user is $4110, which consists of $1000 for the software, $180 annual support, $650 database license, and $2280 for implementation and training. A 10 user license would cost $16′039.00
Prevail
Prevail is an all in one case management tool providing automation. Prevails offers an intuitive easy to use interface, with client & contact management in the form of a digital ‘rolodex’. Document generation can be performed with either Wordperfect, Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat and the scheduling/calendar features integrate with Microsoft Outlook.
There are no prices available on the website so the pricing model is on application.

I want to know if there are lawyers in San Antonio, Tx who help people of low income, and how to contact them?
We went to one presentation about vacation software licence, which they told us it would be very good for our family (of five children), and that they would give us this good discount if we signed right then. We did it, but after thinking better, decided to cancel. We signed a friday, and I tried to contact them, but their office here, in San Antonio doesn’t open on monday. I wanted to talk with the person we met then, but she wasn’t available, and, by the time we talked to someone, it was tuesday, one day after the third day which they give you in the contract, to cancel. We didn’t realize we only had those three days, because, we couldn’t find it in the contract. We tried to talk it over with the person in costumer service, who said would take our petition (sent by us a day later) unto his boss, and that they would reply by mail. The answer was, that we couldn’t get out of it! Is there anything we could do, or someone we could appeal about this? Thank you!
Check with the social security office, they may know. Or just call a lawyer from the phone book and ask where to find out. I believe there’s a list somewhere, can’t remember how I found it before. Been too many years.
