Need advise on type of camera to do candid shots of children, people, pets.?
I eventually want to do professional candid children’s photography. Mostly it is a passionate hobby.
There are the new fabulous Point and Shoot 12px’s for about $300 and there is
the baby I really want, an SLR but is $1000-1300 for 18mm-105.
In conclusion….do I spend $300 now on P&S that I know would take excellent photos but is not an SLR (very important especially with children’s photography) thinking I would buy the SLR in about a year, or better to just buy the SLR and go for it.
Please advise on best SLR too!

I agree with the answer above. Even if money is tight – or ESPECIALLY if money is tight – you need to consider whether it is worth wasting money on a point and shoot camera. You will have ZERO use for a P&S in professional photography, so the money put out for that camera would be money gone forever. You won’t be able to use it for your business purposes, so it will only delay the day that you have enough money saved for your digital SLR, lights, backdrops, etc.
IF you are simply unable to think about a DSLR now and must give it a go with a P&S, don’t consider one of the monster zooms. Look at something like a Canon S90 or G11 that has a larger sensor. (There are others.) The S90 would probably be my choice for a value leader, even though it’s not cheap. It has a very useable zoom range (for portraiture) and offers full manual control. The sensor is decent size and it doesn’t cram a few extra million pixels onto the sensor, which would degrade image quality instead of improve it.
