Instead of learning history in elementary school should children learn Spanish?
I don’t think that history is a very important topic for children in elementary school and I think it would be a good idea to lessen or just get rid of history in elementary schools and instead they can learn Spanish. Almost all other countries can speak multiple languages while Americans tend to only speak one. Additionally if people learn a language when they are young it is a lot easier for them to learn. I think that this would greatly help in creating a bilingual America.
However maybe this should be left up to the states and not mandatory throughout the United States. If you think this then tell me what you think your state should do.
I agree fully, but SOME of us have that “I’m American, I’m better than everyone in the world. I don’t need to know what you’re saying because you ain’t me!” though process, that leaves all the GOOD ideas crushed. and just for some stupid pride. and, because of THEM, we have to live in our own little bubble, oblivious to the world around us.

So many Mexican immigrants have come into the country, that you can’t drive through the San Fernando Valley without seeing a single billboard in Spanish. AND in basically every shop, business, or whatever, many of them can barely speak English. and yet, our schools’ Foreign Language programs STILL suck, and people would rather complain about the whole deal than just suck it up and learn how to say, “I’m sorry, i don’t speak Spanish.”? Why do we have to resist ANYTHING un-American, simply because it’s un-American? It’s so horribly ignorant. We don’t even have to get rid of History, but we NEED to know another language. We’re the only country that doesn’t, and everyoneelse LAUGHS at us for it. SO much for pride.

Best way to teach my child spanish?
I want to teach my 10 year old daughter spanish. I do speak the language ( I was born and raised in a spanish speaking country) but I don’t know if I should print out pages, buy a workbook or what. Her school doesn’t teach spanish and she wants to learn so she can speak to family members when she goes to Colombia.
I’m open to any suggestions.

First of all, speak to her in Spanish as much as possible, even if she doesn’t understand it at first. When you go to visit your relatives, never speak English with her. Immersion is the best way to learn a language, hands down.
I would also recommend maybe buying a beginning workbook to use with her every once in awhile. Also, at some community centers there are language classes for kids: try enrolling her in one.
Another great way to learn is to (when she’s old enough) send her to a Spanish speaking country over the summer for a few weeks. You can either do a foreign exchange program or send her to a language learning summer camp for a few weeks.. the camps are fun and she’d learn LOTS more than she ever would staying in the US.
