Demons, Devils and Darkness – Shadow Play for Children with Yoga and Story

While visiting France this May I toured the 15th century Chateau Tarascon in Bouches-du-Rhone, Provence.

I was struck by the archetypical image of the immense castle towering ahead of me. The history of kings, queens, a hundred years’ war and prison and protection against invaders were spoken by the walls and halls. But it is the image of the castle that I could feel in my body. It resonated with something inside my heart.

Mythical shapes touch something deep within us. As Joseph Campbell said, a mythic image has one foot in reality and one foot in the transcendent. Symbols point to the unfathomable but sensed divine realm that they are reflected images of. They also have their stories to accompany those images to assist the psychological needs of the people at a certain time to deal with their reality and life circumstances.

How did King Rene’s castle and town get its name Tarascon? It’s a story! Dating back to the first century, Jacques de Voraigine compiled it during the middle ages in the book of the lives of saints called The Golden Legend (Aurea Legenda.)  I couldn’t find it there. Maybe you can though. My retelling of this legend came from reading the exhibits and books at the castle.

The Story of Martha and The Beast – Retold by Sydney Solis

Legend has it that after Jesus died, and his disciples were scattered across the land, Martha and her sister, Mary Magdalene, boarded a boat with their brother, Lazarus, and companion, Maximinus.

This boat had no sails, no oars and no rudder. Only a great blast of wind pushed the boat and its travelers to the shores of a town called Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the land of Provence. The boat carried Martha and her companions up the Rhone River before coming to rest near some dark woods, where they walked until they found the town of Nerluc. The travelers saw that all the people of the town were weeping and moaning in the square.

Martha appeared before the townspeaple,  She, like her sister, Mary Magdalene, wore a long gown and a veil on her head. She wore a belt made from hemp rope with a cross tied to it.

“What’s the matter?” Martha asked one of the townspeople. “Why are you so upset?”

The people looked at her in terror. “There is a horrible monster that lives in the dark woods,” a man said.

“It is The Tarasque,” a woman  said. “He has the head of a lion with claws and horns and teeth sharp as swords. He is half beast, half fish, with the tail of a serpent and a tip like a scorpion. A shell of a turtle mounts his body, and two great wings sprout from his sides.”

“It comes from Galacia. Our King tried to kill it, but failed,” the man said. ”The Tarasque terrorizes us in our town. It eats beasts; It eats men, devouring them whole! It drags live men back to its lair. Oh, it is horrible, HORRIBLE.  You must kill the monster! You must kill the monster if you want to stay with us here!”

“Well!” Martha said. “I’ve never heard of such a thing. Such horror and misfortune!” And she set off for the woods, walking along the path of bones that led her to the center of the dark forest. There she saw the creature eating a man. The Tarasque was furious at the sight of her and began to beat his wings, creating a fierce wind. He slapped his scaly tail on the earth and shook the hills before giving a loud shrieking cry that pierced the hearts of the townspeople.

Martha brandished the cross in front of the beast. The Tarasque froze in mid air, immediately lowered its head and knelt down at her feet. Martha then untied the belt around her waist, shaped it into a leash, and slipped it over The Tarasque’s neck. Now tame, the creature walked calmly back to town with Martha.

She brought it before the people in the town square. Terrified at the sight of the monster, they began to throw stones at the creature. The Tarasque did not resist, even when they threw spears as well. Finally The Tarasque was dead.

“Why did you kill it? Martha scolded. “It was tame!”

“Oh!” a man said. “I didn’t know! I feel so terrible about killing it now!” All the townspeople started weeping again.

Just then a woman called out, “Let’s change the name of the town and name it Tarascon. We’ll have a parade in The Tarasque’s honor and celebrate it with a festival. That way we won’t feel so bad any more!”

And so they did. And the townspeople lived on. And that is the story of St. Martha and The Beast. And don’t forget to tame your beast, not kill it.

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

I think it’s interesting to note the similarities between this Christian myth and that of the myth of the Hindu Goddess Durga Kills the Buffalo Demon Mahishasura. It also reminds me of the story of St. Francis and the Wolf and many others of creatures out of control. It’s interesting to note that it’s the feminine that tames the beast, as Martha succeeds where the King failed. As Shamhat in the Mesopotamian epic Epic Gilgamesh tamed the wild beast/man Enkidu.

The image is that of this beast that must be stopped. It’s taking over everything, throwing things out of balance, killing everybody, causing suffering and agony. It’s interesting that The Tarasque is half fish, like something coming up from the second chakra’s watery creative area and climbing for the heart and crown chakras, such as the mythical creature of the makasana pose. Then there is the head of the lion. Wings, a turtle shell. All these interesting elements and images. There is this creature that must be recognized and tamed and brought into awareness and integration within ourselves.

It’s the mythical darkness of ourselves. Our dark half, the beast. Our ego, and it’s our Self. It must be recognized, honored and expressed, as well as tamed.

Everybody has a dark side, a shadow, as Carl Jung called it. Those parts of our selves we reject or are unknown and unconscious, unreflected upon. By honoring the shadow and becoming aware of it, we create opportunity for healing and integration of these rejected or unknown aspects of ourselves. It helps us reconcile the reality that nature is horrific as well. We need to be able to see what we can’t see and we use drama and ritual to solve that problem. Having a story about why things happen give us a way to feel better about things. The ritual can absolve the guilt.

Greeks used theatre of drama and tragedy to bring about catharsis in the audience members who experienced the play by identifying with the characters. Shakespeare allows us to stab Caesar. Children can express these negative energies within them and bring awareness to the issues in their life and confronting life’s realities by the ritual of yoga, movement, play and art to act out “Being The Tarasque.” I remember telling second graders the Brazilian story of Botoque, the Jaguar and the Fire. The children all instinctually brought out their claws and showed their fangs, hissing like the Jaguar, ready to eat the human who betrayed him. They loved “being” the Jaguar. If children are not able to express their shadow, it will “explode” in some other fashion to be acknowledged, through anger, destruction or violence.

In Eastern mythology, the demons are not cast out as in Western mythology. They are recognized as just playing their part in duality. Somebody has to do that job in the dark. There is never anything wrong or imperfect about our nature. It leads to self-acceptance and self-love, something needed for self-confidence, which is needed to be respectful to others.

By putting the body into therapy and education using yoga and story, the psyche is tuned to the body and the nervous system and is balanced through the repeated patterning in the body through the enactment of the story and the ritual of movement. This brings about healthy kids who are self aware and aware of themselves in the environment and can create a harmonious environment.

People still celebrate the story of St. Martha and The Tarasque with festival and ritual. Have a festival and get in contact with your inner Beast!

BEING THE TARASQUE

by Sydney Solis

Begin in Lotus, padmasana.

The Tarasque has a Body and Head of a Lion – simhasana. Children can roar like a lion and flash his teeth, claws and horns; slap its snake/scorpion tale; be the beast Tarasque. Be the beast within, raging, roaring, letting it all out.

He is half Beast. Roll over onto backs. He is half Fish, matyasana.

Slide down to face the floor. Breathe in makasana for a while, pressing belly into floor with full breaths to develop the diaphram.  It has a tail of a Serpentbhujangasana, with its tip like a Scorpion, vrischikaasana anybody!?!

Let children move their legs in any way they want in stinging or flopping motions. They can lie on their backs and kick in the air, or controlled kicking, up down at the knees, slapping the calves.

He has the shell of a Turtle – kurmasana.

It has Wings – garudasana, then children extend out their wings of arms and legs when releasing the pose.

Children can then roam around the room in character as The Tarasque. What does it want to say? What does it want to do? What does it want to express? Is he angry about something? Why does it eat people? How does he feel? Use “Why” to follow up kids’ answers.

The Tarasque is tamed. Coming to hands and knees, children roll down into balasana.

The Tarasque is dead-  Slide down onto belly and lie prostrated on the earth, arms stretched out ahead. Then roll over to shavasana.

RELAXATION AND MEDITATION

Have children relax in shavasana, then call out the following images:

River

Boat

Woman

Castle

Dark Forest

Beast

Cross (or symbol of preference)

The Beast Angry and Devouring

The Beast Calm and Quiet

Tell children to affirm. “I Love All of Me. I Attend to and Tame my Beast.”

Sydney Solis as a calm Tarasque, at Chateau Tarascon, Provence.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES

ART

Ask children to draw a picture of  The Tarasque or their favorite part of the story. Ask them to tell about their creature or favorite part of the story, and pull out vocabulary words your hear for them to write down on the paper. Write the words down for pre-literate children.

Have a Tarascon Festival! Make costumes, make a piñata type creature shaped like The Tarasque and roll it around the classroom (or neighborhood, town!) and have a parade! Have a Tarascon dance with music!  Celebrate with great food, string The Tarasque piñata up and club it to death for its candy!!!

MYTHICAL BEASTS

I learned this from Caldicott Winning Author Gerald McDermott at the Joseph Campbell Foundation retreat at Esalen. Have one child or a group of child make a specific body part of the beast. One child or group makes the head, another makes the legs, arms, torso, tail, wings, shell, or whatever the beast will be. Then assemble the whole creature.

SHADOW BEAST THEATRE

Darken the room, shine a flashlight behind a child and against a plain, white wall and have the child act our its beast and watch its shadow dance. Add some instrumental or other music to move to. How does the beast move to this type of music? Make a video tape of it and have children watch it and see themselves in an effort for self awareness of their behaviors and characteristics.

TARASCON RITUAL

Have children make a circle. One child comes to the circle and becomes whatever horrible creature they want. The rules are that they can’t touch anybody in the circle or hurt them. There is an imaginary boundary, that allows you to rage, roll on the floor, cry, strike a yoga pose, be a Devil, be a Demon, be a God. sit peacefully, whatever as long as they don’t hurt anybody else. Time for a few seconds to longer periods of more controlled behavior that explores the role of the beast and can ask it questions and see what images arise in the body as answers.

DRAMA

Have children take turns playing the parts of the characters in the story. One is Martha, The Tarascon, the towns man and woman. Have them try out different roles.

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

Teach yoga to children. Tell them stories. Save civilization with the imagination and the body.
